Traverse City, Mich. (March 7, 2007) — Auto enthusiasts from across the state rolled into Wesley Bolin Plaza on the state capitol grounds this morning, bringing their collector cars to celebrate the passing of pro-hobbyist legislation and Arizona Collector Car Appreciation Day.

McKeel Hagerty, CEO of Hagerty Insurance Agency, presented Representative Ray Barnes with Hagerty’s first-ever Hobby Advocate of the Year Award for his support of Arizona’s collector vehicle community. “We chose to create this award for those who show a unique commitment to the advancement of pro-hobbyist legislation throughout the country,” says Hagerty. “Ray Barnes is an exemplary advocate of our cause and a very deserving recipient of this honor.”

The recently approved legislation was passed with near-unanimous support from lawmakers, signaling a significant victory for the collector car hobby. The law allows for the exemption of collector vehicles from Arizona’s emissions testing requirement.  This legislation pays a fitting tribute to Arizona’s contribution to classic car heritage and will serve to promote the expansion of the collector car hobby in the future.

“I am honored to be presented with the Hobby Advocate of the Year Award,” said State Representative Ray Barnes. “The passing of this legislation was a great success for the entire state of Arizona.”

A luncheon with lawmakers and vehicle enthusiasts provided a unique opportunity for hobbyists to meet with their legislators to discuss any concerns they have for the future of the hobby, as well as express their gratitude for the passing of the emissions exemption.
